Disney Movies that deserve the remake treatment
With Disney's obsession with live action remakes, I decided to speculate which movies I think that actually deserve a remake rather than choosing movies they picked out of a hat. Now before we begin, I am not saying that all of these deserve live action remakes. There are those I believe deserve an animated remakes.
9: The Haunted Mansion (Hear me out)
I know we just got a Haunted Mansion remake, however, in the next 20 years I hope we get one that follows the story of the haunted mansion attached to the ride, specifically the one in France. If you were not aware each Disney park Haunted Mansion has a story to it. The story of the groom who was paid off by the bride's father to leave the bride at the alter which then resulted in many deaths including her own and her fathers is the premise of majority of the Haunted Mansion attractions, but the way the Disneyland Paris' Haunted Mansion, Phantom Manor, deepened the background of the house by intertwining it with Big Thunder Mountain and Frontierland making the world of Haunted Mansion much more exciting than the other iterations including the original. It also has a designated villain that could be explored, and the way the ride ends and subsequently the story ends could be a great to be continued for a sequel.
8: Treasure Planet
I know I'm not the only one who wants this to be remade. When it came out in 2002 (yes, it really did come out 21 years ago. Don't worry, I feel queasy too.) it didn't come out with a bang. In fact, it such a box office bomb that its speculated that it was the last 2D Disney movie until 2009's Princess and the Frog. With that being said, there is a lot of potential now with the betterment of CGI and animation. Can you imagine how that steampunk outer space would look like now today? Ugh. I want it so bad.
7: Newsies
I know you all expect me to say that the 1992 newsies deserves a remake treatment...but no, the opposite. The 2012 stage musical deserves a film remake treatment. Sure, we got a pro-shot in 2017 which is fantastic in its own right. But wouldn't it be cool to see a musical film version of the stage musical? It would be really cool to see, especially with how supporting unions are a big right now. I don't know, I just think its a missed opportunity to not do this.
6: Robin Hood
I'll be upfront. The only reason I want this remade is because I want the original ending intended for the animated movie to be the ending for the new movie. If you didn't know, the way the original ending was supposed to be was that Prince John would attempt to kill a wounded and defenseless Robin Hood with Maid Marion in the room but is stopped by King Richard returning and stopping him. Upon hearing this, my brain went fanatic and couldn't stop imagining how 2020s Disney would do this now, if they didn't have their nose up their asses about scarring children. Like, imagine Prince John going to Robin, attempting to kill him but Maid Marion stops him herself. Like—how badass would that be? UGH! I wish it would happen. As for a remake treatment as a whole goes, I don't care if its live action or animated, but I do think either with a human cast would be a good update for a remake.
5: The Sword and the Stone
Unlike Robin Hood, The Sword and the Stone hasn't had that much love and care. No one really talks about it, and for this reason I think it would be good to remake it. Also like Robin Hood, I don't truly care if its animated or live action, as long as it has the heart of the original but also gives us more to the story that makes sense then I'm on board.4: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
I don't know about you, but every time I watch The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (which really should be switched around) I always wonder why Disney hasn't made a full length version of it yet, especially now how people really love fall atmosphere and how drastically different animation is now since the 1940's release of the original. Sure, it doesn't have to be an over 2 hours movie but a good one hour and forty-five is probably just enough to give The Legend of Sleepy Hollow a good modern take (but not so much it is in modern times) of this fascinating story.
3: Wind in the Willows
Along with The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Wind in the Willows, hasn't had much love from the Disney company or movie goers. No one really talks about it except the few I found on the reviewer YouTube spaces. Since the original story has disconnected short stories that veer away from the main story it could find a way to incorporate them or discard them as needed, but I do think the story deserves its own spotlight as its own movie.
2: John Henry
This one probably doesn't cross anyone's mind for potential remake treatment movies, but this one is one I think could be done well under a good and appropriate director. The story of John Henry derives from the African-American folk hero story and was made into a short in 2000, though I could not find when it played in theaters. (I assume it played before The Emperors New Groove since that also released in 2000). The story follows John Henry, a freed slave, and his wife, working as a steelworker who inspires the other immigrant and freed slaves by challenging the machinery that took their jobs away with nothing but his strength of ten men and his hammer. It is a story that resonates and is beautiful as it is tragic. I believe in good hands a deep exploration of this story character wise would be amazing to see. If you haven't seen the original, please go see it. It is amazing.
1: Hunchback of Notre Dame
Hear me out, I believe Hunchback of Notre Dame deserves a remake...however...not the original animated version. Much like Newsies, I believe the stage musical deserves a remake. Unlike Newsies, Hunchback did not get a Broadway run nor a pro-shot unfortunately. It had a regional run in Papermill, like Newsies and in La Jolla where it was really enjoyed by audiences. The musical version darkens the story of the original by incorporating story elements from the book and making it truly a marvel of adaptation. I truly believe it deserves to be number 1 on this list and deserves so much more than Disney is willing to give it.
