The holidays are around the corner, and once again I feel nostalgic. Around this time as a kid, I remember turning on channel 36 on Comcast and putting on Disney Channel, then the Halloween bumper would come on: Hauntober Fest Promo
(Fun fact the promo announcer is the same guy who played Max in A Goofy Movie.)
4: Mostly Ghostly-Who Let The Ghosts Out
Based on RL Stines' books of the same name, Most Ghostly was adapted into a Disney Channel Original Movie starring Madison Pettis, Brian Stepanik, Kim Rhodes, and Sterlin Beaumon. It was released in 2008 and focuses on an eleven-year-old kid and his ghost friends as he tries to keep them away from an evil ghost who is after them. This movie was released with pretty good fanfare but has not stayed in the minds of those who grew up with Hauntober. Revisiting it, it is fun watching Disney-TV darlings clearly having fun on set while filming this movie. It is great for a younger-than-12 crowd and should be a part of the lineup again.
3: Mom's Got a Date With A Vampire
Ever wanted Mr.Maxwell Sheffield from The Nanny to be a vampire? Never thought about it?
Well, Disney did.
When grounded teens, Adam and Chelsea want to sneak out to go to a concert and a date, they push their single mom (played by Caroline Rhea) to go out on a date with a mysterious man she met at a grocery store. But when Adam and Chelsea's little brother Taylor realizes that the mystery man (played by Shaughnessy) is a vampire, they have to undo their actions before he turns their mom into a vampire too. This movie is so adorable.
I loved this underrated movie as a kid and was excited to see it any time they put it on which was rare. No one talks about this movie and the fact that they got Sheffield and Aunt Hilda in a movie together. That's insane, and they act great off each other. This movie should be replayed on their Hauntober or now Monstober line-up.
2: My Babysitter's a Vampire
By 2010 Twilight was unbelievably everywhere and so were parody movies (Anyone remember Vampire suck?), so when Disney announced a parody version of the vampire genre, everyone knew it was either going to be cringy or great. It's cringefully great.
When Ethan and his friend Benny find out that Sarah, Ethan's little sister's babysitter is a vampire, and that there is a plot by the head vampire to lead all the people in town to their deaths, they have to team up and take him down.
This movie started the career of Vanessa Morgan (now of Riverdale fame), and she has a great time in this role. This movie was so successful it spawned a 2-3 season TV show that piggybacked on their lives after the first movie. It was quite cool to see Disney have a different attempt at vampires by making Sarah not drink blood, and the lore they have for their vampires is actually pretty cool. Disney should add this back to their Hauntober/Monstober lineup.
1: Casper Meets Wendy
Everyone talks about 1995's Casper with Devon Sawa and Christina Ricci, but no one talks about 1998's Casper Meets Wendy.
Starring baby Hilary Duff and Jeremy Foley (as the voice of Casper), Casper Meets Wendy brings the old cartoon shorts of The Little Witch and Casper to the 21st century. While on vacation with his uncaring uncles, Casper meets a little witch named Wendy who is on the run with her aunts from a warlock looking to kill Wendy so she won't be as powerful as he is. Casper and Wendy bond despite the fact that witches and ghosts aren't supposed to like each other. When Wendy is captured by the warlock Casper has to convince his uncles to help him save Wendy and her aunts.
This movie was so cute and a nice spin-off to the 1995 Casper, and a great kids Halloween movie. It is also a great introduction to Wendy as a character since the Casper comics and shorts are never talked about and the ones with Wendy are even less discussed.
Well, that's it for the posts for October! Let me know in the comments what Halloween DCOMS you think I missed. Thank you for reading these new posts I have, and I hope to see you in November for more Nostalgia posts!
